Mexico City is one of the most walkable cities I have experienced. Entire days can pass wandering through neighborhoods like Coyoacán, Centro Histórico, and Polanco. The metro is efficient, the parks are inviting, and the streets are constantly alive with movement. But walking all day in a city that sits over 7,000 feet above sea level, often under strong sun, means a few small items can make a big difference.
These are the simple things I carry when spending a full day exploring the city. I try to choose products that are environmentally responsible, reusable, or made by companies that prioritize sustainable materials.
1. A reusable water bottle
Hydration matters more than people expect in Mexico City. The altitude and sun can sneak up on you. A stainless-steel insulated bottle keeps water cool for hours and eliminates the need to buy plastic bottles during the day.
Look for bottles from companies like Hydro Flask or Klean Kanteen, which focus on durable designs meant to last for years.

2. Natural deodorant or antiperspirant
Coming from a colder climate, I sometimes underestimate how quickly I warm up while walking through Mexico City. Carrying a small natural deodorant helps me stay comfortable after a long metro ride or a warm afternoon in the sun.
Brands like Native and Schmidt’s use plant-based ingredients and avoid aluminum and harsh chemicals.
3. Biodegradable cleansing wipes
Sometimes a quick refresh is all you need after walking several miles or climbing metro stairs. Biodegradable wipes made from plant fibers are a good option when water and soap are not immediately available.
Look for brands like Goodwipes or Caboo, which use bamboo or other renewable materials.
4. A lightweight daypack
A small backpack makes it easier to carry water, snacks, and anything you pick up during the day. I prefer backpacks made from recycled materials when possible. Companies like Patagonia (I prefer the cross-body style) and Osprey offer compact packs designed for travel and city walking.

5. A portable phone charger
Your phone becomes your map, camera, transit guide, and translator in Mexico City. A small portable charger ensures you do not lose access to navigation or metro directions late in the day.
Brands like Anker produce reliable chargers that last for years and reduce the need to replace electronics frequently.
6. A compact travel umbrella
Mexico City’s weather can shift quickly, especially during the rainy season. A small umbrella takes almost no space in a bag and can save a long walk back to the metro.

7. Hand sanitizer
Street food in Mexico City is wonderful, and part of the experience is trying things along the way. A small bottle of plant-based hand sanitizer makes it easy to clean your hands before eating.
Companies like Dr. Bronner’s offer organic formulas that are biodegradable and packaged with sustainability in mind.
Walking is one of the best ways to understand Mexico City. The city reveals itself slowly through plazas, street markets, murals, and neighborhood parks. Carrying a few thoughtful items makes those long days of exploration easier, more comfortable, and a little more sustainable.
